Frank Dicksee

1853

1928

Sir Frank Dicksee was a British academic painter known for his romantic and historical subjects, as well as his elegant portraits. Associated with the later Pre-Raphaelite tradition, Dicksee’s works often depicted literary or medieval themes, rendered with rich color and dramatic composition. Notable paintings include Romeo and Juliet, The Mirror, and Chivalry. He was also an accomplished portraitist, painting British aristocracy and society figures. In 1924, he became President of the Royal Academy. Though his popularity declined with the rise of modernism, Dicksee’s refined technique and theatrical style continue to captivate admirers of Victorian and Edwardian art.
