Paul Gauguin

1848

1903

Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist known for his bold colors, simplified forms, and exotic subject matter. Initially a stockbroker, he left his career and family to pursue art, developing a style that broke from naturalism in favor of symbolism and emotion. Gauguin spent time in Brittany and later traveled to Tahiti, where he created vibrant, dreamlike paintings like Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? His work influenced modern movements such as Primitivism and Symbolism, and artists like Picasso and Matisse. Though controversial in life and legacy, Gauguin’s art remains a cornerstone of modernism.
