Albert Bierstadt

1830

1902

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter renowned for his grand landscapes of the American West. A key figure in the Hudson River School and the Rocky Mountain School, he combined romanticism with topographical detail to capture the majesty of nature. Bierstadt travelled extensively through the U.S., joining westward expeditions and translating those experiences into dramatic, light-filled canvases like Among the Sierra Nevada, California. Though sometimes criticized for idealizing the wilderness, his works helped shape public perception of the American frontier. At the height of his fame, Bierstadt’s paintings were exhibited internationally and acquired by major collectors and institutions.
