Wassily Kandinsky

1866

1944

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist credited as one of the pioneers of abstract art. Initially trained in law, he turned to painting in his thirties, developing a style that abandoned traditional subject matter in favor of spiritual and emotional expression through color and form. Influenced by music and Theosophy, works like Composition VII and Improvisation 28 explore synesthetic relationships between sound and image. Kandinsky was a key figure in Der Blaue Reiter and taught at the Bauhaus. His writings, including Concerning the Spiritual in Art, shaped 20th-century aesthetics and modern abstraction.
