Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch-born British painter known for his luxurious depictions of classical antiquity, particularly Roman life. Trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, he moved to England in 1870 and became a celebrated figure in Victorian art. His meticulous attention to historical detail and mastery of marble textures created vivid, romanticized visions of the ancient world. Works like The Roses of Heliogabalus and Spring exemplify his refined style. Knighted in 1899, Alma-Tadema was immensely popular during his lifetime, though his reputation waned in the 20th century before being reappraised more favourably in recent decades.
