Robert Delaunay

1885

1941

Robert Delaunay was a French painter and key figure in the development of Orphism, a movement combining Cubist structure with bold colour and lyrical abstraction. Alongside his wife, Sonia Delaunay, he explored the interplay of light, rhythm, and movement in art. His iconic series Windows and Eiffel Tower used overlapping shapes and prismatic colour to evoke energy and dynamism. Delaunay was fascinated by modernity—machines, aviation, and urban life—and sought to capture it through colour harmonies. His work helped bridge Impressionism and abstraction, influencing both early 20th-century modernism and the later development of non-objective art.
