Pierre Bonnard

1867

1947

Pierre Bonnard was a French painter and printmaker, known for his vibrant use of colour and intimate domestic scenes. A founding member of the Post-Impressionist group Les Nabis, he blended decorative design with emotional subtlety. Bonnard often painted everyday moments—bathing, dining, reading—infused with warmth and psychological depth. He favoured memory over realism, and his interiors often glow with diffused light and layered colour. His longtime companion Marthe frequently appeared in his work. Though overshadowed by some of his contemporaries during his life, Bonnard is now recognized as a master of modern colour and lyrical composition.
