Leslie Hunter

1877

1931

George Leslie Hunter was a Scottish painter and a member of the Scottish Colourists, known for his vibrant still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Born in California, he moved to Scotland as a child and was largely self-taught. Hunter’s early career included book illustration in Glasgow and time in Paris, where he was influenced by French Post-Impressionists like Matisse and Cézanne. His mature work features bold color and expressive brushwork, especially in depictions of the Scottish countryside and French Riviera. Though his career was marked by personal struggles, Hunter is now celebrated for his luminous contribution to early 20th-century Scottish art.
