Gerard van Honthorst was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his theatrical use of light and shadow, influenced by Caravaggio. He earned the nickname “Gherardo delle Notti” (“Gerard of the Nights”) for his candlelit scenes and nocturnal compositions. Van Honthorst studied in Italy before returning to Utrecht, where he became a leader in the Caravaggisti movement. His works ranged from genre scenes and portraits to grand biblical and mythological narratives. He later became a court painter to Charles I of England and Frederick V of the Palatinate. His dramatic lighting and realism had a lasting impact on Dutch Baroque art.
