Frederic Edwin Church

1900

Frederic Edwin Church was a central figure in the Hudson River School, known for his vast, luminous landscapes of the Americas and the Middle East. A pupil of Thomas Cole, Church embraced a romantic, detailed style infused with grandeur and naturalism. His most famous works, such as The Heart of the Andes and Niagara, showcase his fascination with light, geography, and scientific exploration. Church travelled extensively, from South America to the Arctic, gathering inspiration for his epic compositions. He also designed his own estate, Olana, in the Hudson Valley. Church remains a defining artist of 19th-century American landscape painting.
