Francesco Hayez was a leading Italian Romantic painter, known for his historical, biblical, and literary subjects, as well as emotionally charged portraits. His most iconic work, The Kiss, became a symbol of Italian nationalism during the Risorgimento. Hayez’s art blends neoclassical clarity with romantic drama, often portraying themes of political struggle, passion, and nostalgia. Based in Milan, he was also an influential teacher at the Brera Academy. Hayez helped shape the cultural identity of 19th-century Italy through both his paintings and pedagogy.
