August Macke

1887

1914

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and a key member of the Blue Rider group. Known for his bright, colorful compositions, Macke combined influences from Fauvism and Cubism to create harmonious, poetic scenes of everyday life. His works, like Lady in a Green Jacket and Turkish Cafe, emphasize light, color, and simplified forms. Macke’s career was tragically cut short when he was killed in World War I at age 27. Despite his brief life, his vibrant and optimistic art significantly shaped early 20th-century modernism in Germany.
