Andre Derain

1880

1954

André Derain was a French painter, sculptor, and co-founder of Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. Known for his bold, expressive use of colour and simplified forms, Derain helped revolutionize modern painting with works like Charing Cross Bridge and Boats at Collioure. He later shifted toward a more classical style, drawing on Renaissance influences. Derain also created set designs, sculptures, and book illustrations. Though his later work diverged from Fauvism’s radical energy, his early contributions were pivotal in the evolution of 20th-century art. He remains a complex figure, both celebrated for his innovation and debated for his conservative turn.
