John Constable was a major English landscape painter, celebrated for his naturalistic depictions of the English countryside, particularly the area around his native Suffolk—now known as “Constable Country.” Rejecting idealized landscapes, he focused on direct observation and atmospheric effects, using loose brushwork and studies from life. Works like The Hay Wain and Dedham Vale highlight his love of rural life and his ability to capture light, weather, and sky. Though not widely recognized during his lifetime in England, he found acclaim in France and later became a key influence on the Barbizon School and the Impressionists.
